Lean & Supply Chain Assessment

Start with an Assessment. Fix the right problems first. In two days on site we find the few issues driving most of your operational cost and delay, then hand you a prioritized roadmap with the return on every project.

Every operation has a list of problems. Productivity is off, inventory is too high, orders ship late, the warehouse is out of space, throughput has plateaued. Most leaders can name the symptoms. Far fewer know which one is actually costing them the most, or what is causing it.

That is what the Assessment answers, and it is why more than 90% of Supply Velocity engagements start here. We do not start by selling projects. Unlike firms that run a discovery meeting and then propose a predetermined solution, we learn your business and your people first. Only then do we recommend improvement projects, each with its scope, objectives, tools, timing, fee, and the return on investment where the data supports it.

…the Assessment tends to confirm what leadership suspects. Its value is in what it finds underneath.

You decide what to run, in what order, and whether to run it with us or on your own.

How the Assessment Works

Two days on site. A written report and a prioritized roadmap, typically two to three weeks later.

1. On site, two days

Three for multi-channel or multi-site operations. We interview the people closest to the process, walk the facility, and review your operating data.

  • Kick-off with leadership on day one
  • Interviews and facility walk-throughs
  • Initial read-out at the end of day two

2. 80/20 analysis

We focus on the small number of issues responsible for most of your challenges, rather than weeks of data collection.

  • Root causes, not just symptoms
  • Financial impact of each gap
  • Which Lean tools close it

3. Report and roadmap

A written Assessment Report and an executive presentation with Q&A, typically two to three weeks after the visit.

  • Quick wins you can start immediately
  • Projects with scope, timing, fee and return
  • Nominated implementation team

What we need from you

To keep the Assessment to two days, we ask for a short data package before we arrive. Most clients already have all of it.

  • Roughly 12 months of demand and purchase history at SKU level
  • Current inventory levels
  • Any performance measures and goals you already track
  • An org chart and a facility drawing

What you receive

A findings read-out on the last day on site, then the written Assessment Report and an executive presentation.

  • Prioritized improvement opportunities and quick wins
  • A vision of the future state
  • Recommended projects with objectives, tools, scope, timing, fee, and return where the data supports it
  • Longer-term strategic initiatives
  • Nominated implementation team members and timing

What the Assessment Usually Uncovers

The Assessment tends to confirm leadership's concerns. Its value is in the hidden causes underneath them.

  • Inventory problems caused by planning issues
  • Production delays created by poor material flow or supplier quality
  • Warehouse congestion driven by the wrong storage media
  • Customer service issues that originate in the ERP configuration
  • Excess labor resulting from inefficient process design
Without seeing these relationships, companies spend significant time and money solving the wrong problem.

Ahead of a warehouse move and WMS upgrade, a Lean Warehouse Assessment found shipping placed at the far dock doors, a reactive replenishment process, and metrics that did not tie to the financials. Delivered a swapped dock design, a performance scorecard and a 90-day roadmap.

The CEO estimated operations and supply chain problems were costing $3 to $4 million a year in lost profit. A Lean Assessment value-stream analysis across plan, source, make, store and deliver set the roadmap. Since then: first-pass yield from 81.3% to 94.3%, on-time delivery from 67% to 97%, finished-goods inventory turns from 9.7 to 13.5, and shipping errors from two a month to zero.

Inconsistent onboarding and operating processes were eroding profitability as the business grew. The Lean Assessment recommended a cross-functional Kaizen. Outcome: more than 60 non-value-added steps found, 45 improvement projects identified worth $15M+ in annualized savings, seven implemented within weeks, and $5.5M more in progress.

What stood out the most was their ability to balance objective analysis with practical recommendations. The output was not just diagnostic. It included concrete next steps such as a 90-day roadmap, prioritization of leadership and training gaps, and specific guidance around WMS adoption, SOP development and operating cadence.

I strongly endorse Supply Velocity for their outstanding work in orchestrating Kaizen continuous improvement events. Their facilitation promoted collaborative efforts across our different teams and ensured we captured all of the challenges and unique intricacies to our current processes. Leveraging Supply Velocity's expertise and education, we successfully pinpointed and prioritized significant opportunities during a brief 3-day Kaizen event.

Common Questions

How long does an Assessment take?

Two days on site for most operations, three for multi-channel or multi-site, with the written report and executive presentation typically two to three weeks later.

We already know what our problems are.

Usually the symptoms, yes. The Assessment identifies the root causes and the sequence to address them, which is where improvement efforts most often fail.

Is the Assessment just a sales tool for projects?

No predetermined solution walks in the door. Every recommended project comes with scope, fee and expected return so you can decide, and you can implement any of them without us.

We are not a manufacturer. Does this apply to us?

Assessments run in distribution and warehousing, retail, food and beverage, healthcare supply chains and business services, not only manufacturing.

How much of our team's time does it take?

Interviews and a facility tour across two days, scheduled around the operation, plus the data package before we arrive.

What happens after the report?

You choose. You keep the report, the roadmap and the quick wins either way.

How is this different from a large consulting firm's assessment?

Weeks-long, team-heavy studies are a different product. We apply the 80/20 principle with senior consultants who then run the projects themselves.
